Challenge: This historic project, the capstone of the revitalization of the Meatpacking District in Lower Manhattan, was a two-fold move. First we relocated all museum staff, reference areas, files, crating shops, and libraries to temporary space in Lower Manhattan until the new museum was built. After the new building was finished, we moved everyone a second time from their temporary locations to the Whitney’s new home.

Central Moving: Years before the Whitney project, we worked with MoMA on its successful move during the museum’s renovation and expansion. Key players from the MoMA project team were hired by the Whitney to oversee real estate, construction, and related activities. Being part of the MoMA team was a natural gateway to our participation on the Whitney project.

The museum used the Central Moving warehouse to erect mock-ups of the different furniture manufacturers who were being considered. Members of the Whitney Museum Board of Directors toured our facility and surveyed the mock-ups to decide which manufacturer to use.
